HONOLULU (KHON2) — All lanes of the Harano Tunnel along the H-3 Freeway were reopened after a brief closure due to falling debris on Saturday, March 18.

The closure forced both Kaneohe-bound lanes to be closed around noon on Saturday.

The Transportation Department said the debris may have come off of a private vehicle and the State was still investigating around 5 p.m. Saturday. KHON2 noticed heavy traffic along the Pali Highway as crews worked on the H-3.

No injuries were reported but drivers had concerns after recent events of falling rocks, trees and poles.

“That’s a little concerning, yeah,” said Billie, a Virginia resident. “We don’t have, where I come from the east coast of Virginia, we don’t have tunnels that go through mountains, so we don’t generally worry about falling debris in a tunnel.”

Emergency drainage work is ongoing on the Likelike Highway, so folks had to be rerouted through the Pali before the Harano Tunnel reopened around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
