14-years after holding its debut event in Honolulu, the Hawaii based mixed-martial-arts organization X1 is providing a world-wide front-row seat by joining forces with the UFC.
Starting on March 22, X1 Events will be shown live on UFC Fight Pass, the organization’s streaming service that has nearly half a million subscribers.
“The biggest goal for X1 is to get our fighters to the top show, which is the UFC. With UFC giving us the opportunity to be apart of UFC Fight Pass is something special,” said X1 promoter Al Medeiros.
The debut event will feature UFC President Dana White in attendance at the Filcom Center in Waipahu, as White will feature X1 in his “Lookin For a Fight” reality series which also airs on UFC Fight Pass. The program presents an opportunity for fighters on the card to potentially earn a UFC contract.
The multi-fight deal for X1 is ‘momumental’ according to former UFC Light Heavyweight number-one contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who told KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello while making an appearance at the Hawaii Cannibas Expo, that the already strong state for the sport, just got stronger.
“It’s major. It gives the rest of the world an opportunity to see the talent that Hawaii has, I think it’s top of the food chain,” said Johnson. “I think this gives (Hawaii) the perfect platform to broadcast your talent and whatnot, and not just hear about Max Holloway and BJ Penn. You get to hear about the up and comers, you don’t get to hear about them just when they’re in the UFC, you get to hear about them coming up and I think that’s exciting.”
The aforementioned debut event on UFC Fight Pass on March 22 is being promoted as X1 versus KOP, a Michigan based organization as fighters from each promotion will face off at the Filcome Center.
“Hawaii does have the best mixed martial arts fighters. Whether if they’re in the judo scene, the jiu-jitsu, karate, or just stand and bang, Hawaii has been warriors since day one,” added Medeiros. “We got the guys like Zane Kamaka them that deserve to go on to the bigger shows, we have the Ray Cooper’s, of course he went to PFL. You got the Jerome Max Holloway’s that came to X1 and now is on the UFC. You know, the Yancy’s and everybody in between, so this right here will give the other guys like the Tim Teves’, all these guys like Russel Mizuguchi that spot to shine in the bigger scene.”
