Honolulu’s Michelle Wie battled gusty trade winds at Ko Olina Golf Club and an early morning tee time to post an even par 72 Wednesday in the opening round of the LPGA Lotte Championship Presented by Hershey.
Wie, who began her round on the 10th hole, was at -2 through 15 holes, but a tee shot into the 7th fairway on the par 4 6th hole led to a double bogey.
Overall the Punahou graduate was happy with the way she played Wednesday.
“Breezy out there, but I’m happy with the way I finished.” Wie said.
“Played consistently out there and hopefully over the next couple of days I’ll make a couple more birdies.”
With gusts reaching 30 miles per hour on Oahu, Wie still enjoyed navigating her childhood course.
“I feel like back in the day I was used to it because I played it every week.” Wie added.
“Now that I’m living on the mainland I come back and I get a little surprised by it. It makes it a little bit tougher, but it’s fun I like playing in the wind. I think this golf course should be played in the wind so it was a lot of fun today.”
At a tie for 22nd place after round one, Wie will tee off Thursday at 12:39 pm from the 1st tee box.
