The HHSAA boys basketball state tournament is set to tip off today with matchups all over the state have been set. Division I begins today as the Division II tournament is set to start this Thursday.
The top-four seeds in order are Maryknoll, Moanalua, Lahainaluna, and Waiakea.
As for the quarterfinal round matchups, Baldwin hosts Kapolei over on Maui with both teams vying for their first state championship. Baldwin is coming in at 12-11 overall and will be led by Kui Ross who averages 13.7 ppg. Kapolei is 17-8 overall and is led by guard Ja'Shon Carter who currently ranks sixth in Division I with 17.4 ppg.
Kalaheo will travel to Kailua in a OIA east matchup. Kailua will be seeking their fourth state title and their first since 2009 when they were in Division II. The Surf Riders are 18-12 overall with senior Everett Torres-Kapapea who ranks second in the state with 21.8 ppg.
Kalaheo will be seeking their seventh state title and are 17-16 overall. The Mustangs will be looking to beat Kailua for the first time this season after losing their last three matchups.
The Vikings of Hilo will host Iolani over on the Big Island. Hilo will be looking to win their first state championship since 2000 and are 14-15 overall.
Iolani will be looking to capture their 11th state title and are coming off of a 52-47 win over Saint Francis where senior guard scored a season high 24 points.
In the last game of the opening round of Division I, Punahou hosts Kahuku. Punahou will be seeking their 12th state title and are 26-5 overall. Kahuku is 19-10 overall and will look to bounce back with a huge win after losing two straight.
Division II's first round will begin on Thursday, February 21st.
