The 2019 Division I & II champions of baseball were crowned Saturday night with the Division I title game happening on Maui at Iron Maehara stadium and the Division II championship game being played on Kauai at Vidinha stadium.
In Division II, Saint Francis defeated Waimea 10-4 in what was the school’s first every state championship. Senior James Yamasaki recorded three hits in the championship win as they finish the year at 16-4.
Waimea fought until the very last pitch and while they were not able to capture their first title, they end the season at 10-5 and with over half their team being Juniors or younger, the future is bright for the Menehunes.
In Division I, Punahou defeated Mililani 7-3 to capture their first state championship since 2010 and 14th total. Solid play on both ends of the ball simply wore out the opposing Trojans and with a 3 run surge in the 5th, Punahou had closed out a state title victory. They end the season on top of Division I and with a record of 17-4 while Mililani finishes at 15-3.
With a postseason full of amazing moments and upsets, there is no telling what will happen come next spring. For now however, two teams have emerged in dominating fashion, letting the rest of the state know that they are the very best that Hawaii has to offer.
