MALIBU, Calif.  – The No. 5 University of Hawaii women’s beach volleyball team began its quest for a fourth straight conference title with a 5-0 sweep of CSUN on the opening day of the Big West Tournament at Zuma Beach.
With the win the top-seeded Rainbow Wahine advanced to the championship bracket and will next face No. 2 seed Cal Poly, which advanced to Saturday’s action with convincing 5-0 wins over Sacramento State and Long Beach State.
UH enjoyed a first-round bye as the top seed and had little trouble with the No. 4 seed Matadors (15-11), who defeated UC Davis earlier in the day. The SandBows (25-7) won in straight sets on four of five courts. It was UH’s seventh straight win and 13th in the last 14 contests. Meanwhile, all six of UH’s wins versus Big West opponents this year have been via shutouts.
The No. 3 pair of Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon were the only duo to drop a set, as Taylor Brydon and Lauren McMurray took the opening set 21-19. But it proved to be just a hiccup for the UH duo as they steamrolled 21-10 and 15-6 in the next two sets. The pair is now an astonishing 22-1 on the season with 44 of 47 sets won.
The SandBows next put their undefeated  Big West Tournament record (10-0) on the line in a showdown versus Cal Poly (23-10). The Mustangs upset UH, 3-2, earlier this year at the Big West Challange at Pismo Beach. It was UH’s first-ever loss to the Mustangs in eight all-time meetings.
