Kapolei’s Louis Smolka is back with the UFC and will make his return to the octagon in two weeks at UFC Fight Night 141 in Beijing against China’s Sumudaerji Sumudaerji (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC).
“The emotions, It’s a lot man, I can’t believe that I actually got it done you know? It still doesn’t feel real, I want to cry a little, I’m not even going to lie, but I don’t exactly have time for that right now,” Smolka told KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello on Tuesday.
Smolka, who is currently training in Irvine, California, is 13-5 in his career, including a 5-5 mark in the UFC as a flyweight, will move up in weight-class to the bantamweight division at 135-pounds.
“I am very optimistic about fighting at 135. The cut will be only like 15-pounds as opposed to 25, so I feel like this will make a big difference in my energy level and power and ability to move. I’m optimistic to see how this translates but I’m hoping to have more power. I feel great,” said Smolka.
The event will take place on November 24th and will be streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
Smolka, who is now 27-years old says he is very emotional about his return to the organization. After going on a four fight winning streak which catapulted him into title shot conversation, Smolka then lost four consecutive bouts before being released from the promotion.
Since his departure, he won back-to-back fights, capturing the Gladiator Challenge flyweight title before succesfully headlining a Destiny MMA card in Honololu in June with a third round submission win over Tycen Lynn.
“It’s like it’s happening all over again for the first time. Everybody is all happy for me, my phone is going crazy right now. I’m really happy. I’m just so thankful that I made it back. I’m so happy because now I have a chance to provide for my daughter and my family, maybe give them a future, so I’m really happy for that opportunity,” added Smolka. “I’m just going to try to go out there and do the best for Hawaii. Everybody knows how we fight already so I’m just going to go out there and do what we do.”
Sumudaerji, 22 of China, has earned all eight of his career victories by stoppage, with all but one of them coming by way of knockout.
Smolka, will be joined on the UFC Fight Night 141 card by training partner Martin Day.
The Kailua native will be making his UFC debut against China’s Liu Pingyuan.
“I’m super excited for Martin. I’m really hoping the fans will love him as much as we all do. He really deserves this and he’s gonna make Hawaii proud.”
UFC Fight Night 141 takes place Nov. 24 at Cadillac Arena in Beijing.
