Hawaii baseball team wins Cal Ripken World Series in wake of tragedy

HONOLULU (KHON2) - Congratulations, KRU Baseball!

The 10-and-under team from Hawaii claimed the 2018 Cal Ripken 10-Year-Old World Series championship Saturday in Indiana with an 8-5 extra inning win over Lexington, Ky.

The victory is bittersweet after one of the team's players suffered a horrible family tragedy last month, while the team was in California for the Pacific Southwest regional tournament.

Jayden Rivera's parents, Bronson and Kristy, and his two brothers were driving on Highway 43 in Fresno when their SUV was hit by an oncoming semi-truck. Rivera's 2-year-old brother, Liam, died in the crash.

Following the crash, the team dedicated its games to Liam, with players decorating the backs of their helmets in his name.

They came from behind to score two runs in the bottom of the final inning to capture the regional championship, then battled through pool play all week in Vincennes, Ind. before claiming the World Series win.

The team returns to Honolulu on Monday, Aug. 13. For most of the players, it will be their first time home in nearly a month.
