Hancock homers, but ‘Bows fall again to Long beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In a seesaw game on Friday night, the University of Hawai’i baseball team fell 5-4 to Long Beach State at Blair Field in Big West play.
 
The Rainbow Warriors (20-29, 8-15 Big West) broke a 3-3 tie with a solo home run off the bat of Brennen Hancock in the top of the eighth for a 4-3 advantage. The Dirtbags (13-41, 7-16 Big West) answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth to seize control at 5-4 and hold on for victory in the ninth.
 
Starting pitcher Aaron Davenport put together one of his best performances of his freshman season, setting career highs for innings (7.0) and strikeouts (10), while allowing three runs on five hits. After Davenport exited with the score tied at 3-3, LBSU picked up two unearned runs in the eighth off Dylan Thomas before Dominic DeMiero closed out the eighth. 
 
Hawai’i, which finished with seven hits to Long Beach State’s six, scored three runs in the third on an RBI singles from Maaki Yamazaki and Ethan Lopez to go with a sacrifice fly from Alex Baeza to make the score 3-1 in favor of the ‘Bows.
 
UH held the 3-1 lead until the seventh when a single by Calvin Estrada scored two runs to tie the game.
 
Hancock’s first home run of the season over the fence in center made it 4-3 in the eighth, but the Dirtbags took advantage of two UH errors in the eighth to earn the victory.
 
Hawai’i will wrap up the 2019 season on Saturday, May 25 with a 6:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. HT) game versus Long Beach State at Blair Field.
