After forgoing his senior season at the University of Hawaii to chase his National Football League dreams, reigning Rainbow Warrior team MVP John Ursua will look to impress at Hawaii’s Pro Day at UCLA on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old slot back who missed more than half of his redshirt sophomore season with a torn ACL returned to the field this past season in triumphant fashion.
Ursua led the nation in touchdown catches with 16, while finishing fifth in receiving yardage with 1,143 yards.
Listed at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds the easy knock on the Kailua-Kona native is his size, but having trained with Chad Ikei in Arizona and Kawe Johnson on O’ahu, Ursua reached his bench-press goal of 315-pounds recently while maintaining his agility.
According to the Kealakehe product, it’s been eat, sleep, train, football in preparation to make a statement.
“This is an opportunity for me to showcase what I’ve been working on and what I can do. Obviously I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get invited to the combine but at the end of the day, I’m doing the same drills that they do there and so it’s a situation where I’ve been in before. It’s man, this guy is too small. He may not be fast enough. He may not be able to have the ability to run away from these guys but this is the same chance I have to prove everybody wrong and to show everybody that you’re capable of doing it no matter where you’re from and no matter your size,” Ursua told KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello.
“It’s just like any other Saturday. Like game day. It’s like you got to come in with the right mindset. You got to turn off all distractions. You got to be really locked in, because this is your one opportunity to showcase what you’ve been doing since offseason. They take into account how your body looks, how well you perform and so I’m just really excited to be able to have this chance to perform in front of scouts and coaches.”
Ursua is one of eight former Rainbow Warriors that will tackle the training session at UCLA on Tuesday.
