Hawai’i Pacific University claimed a pair of PacWest Conference Softball weekly awards as centerfielder Cieana Curran was chosen as the PacWest Player of the Week and rightfielder Noel Saunders was honored as PacWest Freshman of the Week for their play last week
Curran, a sophomore from Ewa Beach, Hawai’i/Campbell, led the Sharks to first place in the PacWest Conference standings with a four-game sweep of Notre Dame de Namur. She went 6-for-10 (.600) at the plate with a home run and a triple, notched five RBIs, scored five runs and slugged 1.100 against the Argos. Curran his hitting .364 for the season with three doubles, a triple and a home run. She has 11 RBIs on the season and is 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts.
Saunders, a freshman from Pearl City, Hawai’i/Pearl City, had a strong series for the Sharks against Notre Dame. She hit .417 for the week, going 5-for-12 including a double, with six RBIs and six runs scored. She was 1-of-2 on the base path (caught in a rundown on a double-steal to allow a run to score) and added an outfield assist for a play at the plate. Saunders leads the PacWest Conference with 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored. She is second in the PacWest with 22 hits as she sports a .361 batting average.
It’s the third Freshman of the Week honor for Saunders.
Joining the HPU duo is Chaminade’s Madelyn Stockslager who was selected the PacWest Pitcher of the Week.
The PacWest Conference leading Sharks (12-8, 6-0) host a doubleheader on Tuesday against Holy Names at Howard Okita Field in Kaneohe.
