‘Bows Football returns to practice in preparation for Arizona Wildcats

For the third time in four weeks, the University of Hawai’i football team will travel for a road game, this time to Arizona of the Pac-12 for Saturday’s non-conference match-up at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. Kick-off is 7:45 p.m. PT (4:45 p.m. HT).

After already logging 19,000 miles for its first two trips, UH will tack on another 5,800 round-trip miles to Phoenix along with a 100-mile bus ride to Tucson for its third road game against a Power 5 opponent.

UH and UA will meet for the fifth time and second in Tucson. The Wildcats (1-1) have won each of the four meetings, including the only previous time in Arizona in 1952. The teams last met in 1998 with UA prevailing 27-6 at Aloha Stadium.Game #4

The Rainbow Warriors are coming off its first win of the season, a 41-36, home victory of UT Martin…both UH and Arizona had to overcome double-digit deficits in the second half to defeat FCS opponents this past weekend…UH plays its second Pac-12 team in the first four games of the season. The ‘Bows fell to Cal, 51-31, in the season opener in Sydney, Australia on Aug. 26…this will be UH’s third time on the road in the first four games. The Rainbow Warriors have already logged in 19,000 miles with trips to Ann Arbor, Mich., and Sydney, Australia…this will be just the second visit to Tucson for UH and the first since 1952…UH is 1-8 in its last nine meetings versus Pac-12 squads dating back to 2012. The Wildcats are 1-1 on the year with a 18-16 loss to BYU and a 31-21 win over Grambling State…in its last game, Arizona trailed Grambling State, 21-3, at halftime, put pitched a 28-0 shutout after the break to escape the upset loss…redshirt sophomore Brandon Dawkins, starting in place of injured Anu Solomon, ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, all in the second half, and Arizona rallied from an 18-point deficit…the Wildcats forced six Grambling State turnovers in the second half…head coach Rich Rodriquez is in his fifth season and holds a 34-21 record at the school. This will be the fifth meeting between the teams and just the second in Arizona. Arizona won the last meeting in Tucson, 57-7, in 1952…the teams last met 18 years ago, in Honolulu, when former Rainbow Warrior skipper Dick Tomey led the Wildcats to a 27-6 win in the 1998 season opener…Tomey coached the Wildcats for 14 seasons (1987-2000), compiling a school-record 95 wins. He also coached the Rainbow Warriors for 10 seasons (1977-86) and resigned as the program’s then-winningest coach with 63 wins, since surpassed by June Jones (76).
