Hawaii 34, Fresno State 19, Final

4:54: Hawaii wins 34-19. The Todd Graham era is off to a 1-0 start. Stay with KHON2 for continuing coverage.

4:50: Miles Reed gets the first down. With no Fresno State timeouts left, the ‘Bows can take knees the rest of the way for the victory.

4:49: Cordeiro runs the ball 54 yards to the Fresno State 31. The ‘Bows continue to milk the clock with 1:51 left. Fresno State has burned its last timeout. At second-and-3, one more first down would do it for UH.

4:44: On fourth-and-2, Fresno State goes for it and doesn’t convert. Hawaii gets the ball back with 2:43 remaining on its own 13. Fresno State has all three of its timeouts.

4:42: Fresno State is not going away quietly. The Bulldogs have driven all the way to the Hawaii 13 with 2:58 remaining. Todd Graham calls a timeout to let his defense regroup.

4:35: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. Calvin Turner runs for his second wildcat rushing score of the day, this time from four yards. Shipley’s extra point extends the Hawaii lead to 34-19 with 4:52 remaining.

4:29: Faced with a third-and-6, Cordeiro runs the ball for seven yards to keep the drive going with 8:30 left.

4:26: Dior Scott returns the kickoff to the Hawaii 30 with 10:07 left.

4:25: Fresno State elects to kick a field goal. Silva’s 24-yard attempt is good and cuts the Hawaii lead to 27-19 with 10:13 remaining.

4:23: Hawaii forces a fourth-and-4 on its own 7. Decision time coming for Fresno State with 10:16 remaining.

4:20: Fresno State is on the Hawaii 13 with 11:02 remaining. UH uses its first timeout of the half.

4:14: The ‘Bows drive all the way to the Fresno State 7 and face another fourth down decision. Shipley’s 24-yarder is good, giving the ‘Bows a 27-16 lead with 12:08 remaining in the game.


4:06: Cordeiro runs for one yard to end the third quarter. Hawaii leads 24-16 with one quarter left.

4:05: Haener’s pass is tipped and INTERCEPTED by Jeremiah Pritchard for UH’s third interception of the day. Hawaii gets the ball back on its own 31 with one second remaining in the third quarter.

4:01: UH drives to the Fresno State 31 and elects to kick a field goal on fourth-and-10. Shipley’s 48-yard field goal attempt hits off the upright and is no good. Fresno State gets the ball back.

3:54: Hawaii will start from its own 26 after the kickoff.

3:51: The UH defense holds Fresno State to a fourth-and-goal at the 5 and the Bulldogs elect to kick a field goal instead of going for it. Silva’s 22-yard field goal attempt is good. Fresno State cuts the lead to 24-16 with 3:41 left in the third.

3:47: Hawaii safety Kai Kaneshiro has been ejected for targeting. Fresno State has the ball on the Hawaii 6 with a fresh set of downs and 4:43 remaining in the third quarter.

3:39: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. A methodical six-and-a-half minute drive by UH ends with a two-yard rushing score by Calvin Turner. Shipley’s PAT is good and the ‘Bows lead 24-13 with 6:18 left in the third.

3:29: Haener is INTERCEPTED by Eugene Ford after a tip by Cortez Davis. Hawaii gets the ball back on its own 24 after Ford’s second interception of the day.

3:24: Adam Stack booms the kickoff for a touchback and the second half is underway.



After a shaky start in which Lincoln Victor fumbled the opening kickoff and Chevan Cordeiro was sacked four times midway through the first quarter, the Rainbow Warriors lead 17-13 at the break. Cordeiro has been accurate, completing 14 of his 20 passes for 155 yards and no interceptions. Graduate transfer receiver Rico Bussey from North Texas has been his top target, hauling in six passes for 72 yards. The defense has forced two turnovers, led by graduate transfer linebacker Quentin Fraizer’s four tackles, two tackles for loss, sack and forced fumble.

3:02: Fresno State takes three knees before halftime and trails 17-13 at the break. The Bulldogs will receive the second half kickoff.

2:58: TOUCHDOWN RAINBOW WARRIORS. Cordeiro masterfully leads the ‘Bows down the field and caps the drive with a three-yard touchdown rush. Shipley’s extra point is good and UH leads 17-13 with 27 seconds left in the first half.

2:54: After the kickoff, Hawaii gets the ball back on its own 28 with 1:44 left in the first half.

2:53: TOUCHDOWN FRESNO STATE. To cap a quick two-play drive, Juan Rodriguez hauls in a 18-yard pass from Haener. The extra point snap is botched and there is no attempt. Fresno State leads 13-10 with 1:50 left in the first half. Both teams have two timeouts remaining.

2:50: Dangerous territory for Hawaii, as the Rainbow Warriors go three-and-out and are forced to punt from their own end zone. After Kamehameha’s Adam Stack successfully gets the ball out of the end zone, Rivers returns it to the Hawaii 33 with 2:01 left in the first half.

2:47: Haener is SACKED on third down, and the Bulldogs are forced to punt. Hawaii gets the ball back on its own 1 with 2:33 left in the first half.

2:45: Fresno State faces third-and-10 on the Hawaii 30. Linebacker Khoury Bethley is down with an apparent injury.

2:34: The ‘Bows put together a long drive that ends with Matthew Shipley’s 34-yard field goal. It’s the first career field goal for the true freshman. The Rainbow Warriors lead for the first time today at 10-7 with 7:12 left in the first half.

2:24: Hawaii forces a Fresno State punt and takes over from its own 10 with 12:49 left in the second quarter.


2:15: The first quarter comes to an end with both teams tied at 7. Fresno State has a fresh set of downs at the Hawaii 33 to start the second quarter. It’s been a wild contest so far.

2:06: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. After getting sacked, Chevan Cordeiro takes a 20-yard read option run to the house. Shipley’s extra point is good and the game is tied at 7 with 4:00 left in the first quarter.

2:05: Hawaii is in the red zone for the first time after Chevan Cordeiro hits Jared Smart, who takes it to the Fresno State 17 with 4:52 remaining in the first quarter.

2:04: Hawaii forces its second turnover of the game as Quentin Fraizer recovers a fumble at the Fresno State 37. Hawaii is back in business with 5:51 remaining in the first.

1:59: True freshman Matthew Shipley’s 49-yard field goal attempt is no good. Hawaii still trails 7-0 as Fresno State takes over from the Hawaii 32 with 6:42 remaining in the first quarter.

1:54: Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener overshoots his receiver and it’s INTERCEPTED by Eugene Ford at the Hawaii 18.

1:52: The Rainbow Warriors go three and out, ending with Chevan Cordeiro getting sacked. After UH punts from its own 7, Fresno State starts from the Hawaii 37.

1:50: Hawaii fumbles the kickoff again, but this time it falls out of bounds at the Hawaii 13.

1:47: TOUCHDOWN FRESNO STATE. Ronnie Rivers takes a carry seven yards to the end zone. Cesar Silva kicks the extra point and the Bulldogs lead 7-0 with 11:34 left in the first quarter.

1:45: Hawaii forces a third-and-13 but Fresno State converts to the Hawaii 3 after a 26-yard reception by Josh Kelly.

1:39: Lincoln Victor fumbles the opening kickoff on the Hawaii 26. Fresno State has great field position to start the game.

1:37 p.m.: Hawaii will receive the ball to start this game.


1:15 p.m.: For the first time since 2017, the Rainbow Warriors will wear white pants along with their white jerseys and black helmets. The ‘Bows only wore black pants during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

1 p.m.: The time has come. Kickoff is 30 minutes away, and the game is a full go after both sides posted negative COVID-19 test results. The Todd Graham era at UH is set to begin.
