HONOLULU (KHON2) – On Monday, August 12, 2019, at approximately 11:16 p.m., a female vandalized a sand sculpture in the lobby of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel while another female recorded the incident on a cellular phone. They both then fled in an unknown direction.
Police released the video Thursday, trying to find the suspects, which they now have identified as juveniles. The two also live on Oahu.
Since then, visitors noticed that a lei was placed over the damage.
“I had noticed that they put some leis where the head used to be. I thought that was a decent compromise, but it clearly doesn’t look like it should,” said Bruce.
Jill Harris, one of the owners of Sandsational Sand Sculptures, told us that her partner Thomas Koet is in Hawaii and will repair the sculpture. He began repairs on Thursday.
“It’s amazing how much effort you know probably went into it and how little it took to destroy it,” said Jim Bruce, a visitor.
No arrests have been made in this case yet.
