Woman sexually assaulted when walking dog

A woman out for an early morning walk with her dog was attacked and sexually assaulted Monday morning. It happened around 5 a.m. in Ewa near Konane Park off of Keahumoa Parkway. Police are looking for the suspect.

Police say a man approached the victim, attacked her, and demanded money. He then sexually assaulted the victim before getting away. Sources say the victim was able to escape. The suspect drove off.  While police investigate, park users we spoke to are shocked something like this has happened in a newly developed community.

“There’s a lot of kids here. A lot of Hawaiian Homestead, so a lot of family based areas. It’s terrifying and brings security threats to the area,” said Preston Young of Ewa.

“It’s a scary thought to think. You know women are more vulnerable in the neighborhood, so we need to do something about it to ensure some safety,” said Ewa Beach resident Jennifer Sinchak.

They both agree, neighbors should watch out for each other.

“I heard there’s places on the mainland where they communicate through apps within the community so maybe we can enforce something like that in this area, especially a new place that people are just getting to know each other,” said Young.

Or through neighborhood watches.

“In Hoakalei, there’s a group of people that have decided to volunteer and by have kind of walk around in the neighborhood in the evening just make sure there’s nothing out of the usual,” said Sinchak.

Crimestoppers Honolulu describes the suspect as 5’10”, 220 lbs., with short wavy hair. He was last seen wearing a white or light colored hoodie. He took off in a vehicle that’s a late model Toyota Camry or Corolla, dark green or grey in color.

Officials are asking for the public’s help in this case. If you have any information please call police or Crimestoppers at 955-8300.
