Walgreens opens two-story flagship store in Honolulu

Walgreens’ new flagship store is ready to open in Honolulu.

The two-story store on Kapiolani Boulevard and Keeaumoku Street is slated to open Saturday, Feb. 21, at 9 a.m.

The 35,576-square-foot store will have 120 employees compared to the store’s previous staff of 25, when it opened in the former, smaller Tower Records space.

The newly constructed building was designed to reflect Hawaii’s local heritage, influenced by the traditional halau wa’a (canoe house) with elements of mauka and makai.

“We wanted to make sure we stay true to the cultural design and aspects of the community. When you look at the layout and some of the meaning behind the architecture that’s gone into it, it’s just something that’s one of a kind. I don’t think you’ll see anything like it,” said Paul Blankenship, regional vice president for Northern California and Hawaii Walgreens.

The first floor features an Upmarket Cafe, including a made-to-order juice, smoothie and milkshake bar; fresh hand-rolled sushi, poke and sashimi; produce and on-the-go meal options, like wraps, sandwiches and salads, coffee and baked goods; and beer, wine and spirits.

The second floor includes a pharmacy with an Express Rx pickup kiosk and private health room; and boutique beauty department with cosmetic, skincare and haircare brands, including those not typically found in drugstores, like British skincare brand No7.

The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week with pharmacy hours from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. weekends.

This is Walgreen’s 12th store on Oahu and 18th statewide.
