Waialae Ave. lane remains closed as Hawaiian Telcom continues repairs

News

Expect one Diamond Head-bound lane of Waialae Avenue to remain closed to traffic through the weekend.

The far right lane between 6th and 7th avenues will be coned off as Hawaiian Telcom crews continue to fix a 2,100 pair cable, ducts and manhole.

They were damaged in a water main break at the intersection with 7th Avenue Tuesday.

About 130 business and residential customers in the area have reported telephone and Internet outages.

Crews worked through the night to repair a severely damaged duct and placed a new section of cable. Technicians are now working to painstakingly splice each wire in place, requiring a total of 8,400 splice points.

The damage is so extensive, Hawaiian Telcom says it’s unclear at this time when all repairs will be completed.

Hawaiian Telcom says technicians will work around the clock to restore service as quickly as possible.
