Wahiawa’s Mason captures second Hawaii State Open at Mauna Lani Resort

A legendary Sunday finish on the Kohala Coast at Mauna Lani Resort as Nick Mason captures his second Hawaii State Open title at Mauna Lani Resort.

As round three got under way this morning Nick Mason was one shot off the lead as he teed it up with Parker McLachlin and Jake Grodzinsky. McLachlin would make bogey on the final hole falling back a stroke to tie Mason at 203 forcing a five hole sudden death play-off. Mason would sunk his final putt for birdie to end the play off earning a $10,000 payout. Kyle Suppa shot 68 today to finish at 208 as the low amateur and win the Championship flight.

It was a legendary finish in the Senior Open between Jeff Coston, Dave Eichelberger, Scott Simpson and David Ishii. With over 250 years of golfing experience between the four of them, Coston would claim the first place prize of $5,000 for the second time at Mauna Lani shooting a three day total 209. Eichelberger fell one shot short of Coston while Ishii and Simpson tied for 3rd place at 213. In the Senior Amateur flight, Clayton Amuro captured the low Senior Amateur title earning a $750 gift certificate from the golf shop at Mauna Lani for shooting 223.

After posting the women’s course record of 65 during round two professional Britney Yada fired a final round score of 73 today. Yada’s three day seven under total 209 earned her an $800 paycheck and the Women’s Open. Kristen Peterson of Portland, Oregon finished as the low female amateur at 224. Playing in her very first Hawaii State Open, Peterson earn a $200 gift certificate from Mauna Lani. Pat McGinness held on to his three day lead of A-Flight posting a 231 to finish six shots ahead of Warren Doenz.
