If you’ve been to Pearlridge Center recently, you may have noticed some new additions in the Uptown Center Court.
On Saturday, teams of local architects and allied design and engineering professionals put their building skills to the test to creatively “canstruct” giant structures, each made entirely of several thousand cans of food, in AIA Honolulu’s 13th Annual Canstruction competition.
The creations were designed with this year’s theme in mind: “Comic-CAN.”
HDR’s Dragon Ball ‘C’ was named Best Original Design by a panel of judges, including our own Marisa Yamane!
The structure, roughly 8’ by 8’, depicts the iconic Dragon Ball Z character, Goku, using nearly 3,000 cans of tuna, salmon, black beans, and chicken, along with a hefty amount of peaches.
Now, the architects of AIA Honolulu need your help.
Vote for your favorite structures with canned-food donations up to and including Saturday, Oct. 20. The structure that receives the most canned food from members of the public (one can equaling one vote) will be named People’s Choice Award winner.
Once public voting concludes on Oct. 20, the Canstruction® structures in the Pearlridge Center Uptown Center Court will be “de-canstructed” and the food delivered to the Hawaii Foodbank.
Since the first Canstruction competition on Oahu in 2006, AIA Honolulu has raised 377,042 pounds of needed canned food for the Hawaii Foodbank, enough for 296,883 meals.
