Visitor industry to hold benefit concert for homeless

A benefit concert for Hawaii’s homeless will be held Saturday, May 9, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Great Lawn.

Henry Kapono, John Cruz and Brother Noland will combine their musical talents as The Rough Riders. The concert will also feature Hapa, Amy Hanaiali’i, Jimmy Borges, Starr Kalahiki, Taimane, Makana and the keiki of Halau Hula Olana.

In addition to the concert, there will be an online auction with proceeds being donated to the Institute for Human Services.

The bidding opens Friday, April 10. Highlights of the auction include:

  • Dinner for 10 personally prepared by Chef Roy Yamaguchi in the winner’s home.
  • $750 airline gift card.
  • Accommodations at The Plaza in New York City for four nights with airfare for two from Oahu to New York.

Tickets to the concert are available on www.honoluluboxoffice.comGeneral admission is $45 and VIP tables of 10 are also available.

Rain or shine, the concert is scheduled to go on. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the concert starting at 6 p.m. A fireworks display over the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon will mark the grand finale at 9 p.m.

The benefit is a presentation of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association. Last year, HLTA donated $100,000 to IHS and has pledged $100,000 in 2015 to help fund a two-year program to help return the homeless population to a more purposeful life.
