Three ‘Bows earn preseason All-American honors

Three University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball players have been chosen to the 2016 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-America teams which were selected by a nationwide voting committee.

UH, along with two-time defending NCAA champions Loyola, and BYU each had a nation-best three players earn preseason All-America honors. Senior outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovicand senior libero Kolby Kanetake were picked to the 10-member first team while junior setterJennings Franciskovic was named to the 11-member second team.

All three were AVCA honorable mention All-Americans a season ago. Zarkovic, who sat out a chunk of the season while nursing an injury, averaged 3.20 kills per set and posted double-figure kill totals in 15 matches. Kanetake posted the program’s third-highest dig total in the rally-scoring era with 297 digs last season and finished fifth nationally with a 2.91 per set average. Franciskovic was a second-team all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation pick who ranked sixth nationally with 10.80 assists per set in his first season as the team’s starter.

The All-America teams were selected by an 18-member voting committee comprised of men’s volleyball head coaches and volleyball reporters from around the country. The 10 players receiving the most votes were named preseason first-team while the next 10 vote-getters were selected to the second team. A tie for the final spot resulted in the second team having an additional member.

This is the fifth season that Off the Block has presented the Division I-II Preseason All-America teams. Off the Block is also the only volleyball organization to present men’s volleyball Preseason All-America teams.

UH begins its 2016 campaign with an exhibition match against Team SportConX, Monday, Jan. 4 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The season officially kicks off with the 22nd Outrigger Resorts Invitational, Jan. 7-8, and 10.
