A man accused of shooting and killing another man on Oahu’s North Shore appeared in court Monday morning.
Kaden Kanae is charged with second-degree murder for the death of Thomas McCandless.
According to court documents, McCandless was driving in the area when he saw Kanae and recognized him as the man who shot at him during a fight that occurred back in May.
Police say McCandless pulled over, left his two underage sons in the car, walked up to Kanae, and shoved him.
The men wound up fighting. Police say two more men joined the fight, and McCandless fell to the ground as the men continued to beat him.
At this point, according to court documents, one of his sons had gotten out of the car, saw Kanae pull out what appeared to be a gun, and closed his eyes as Kanae pulled the trigger. He heard a loud noise and told police that “Kanae stood over McCandless and aimed the gun at his heart.”
His son called 911 and tried to render first aid while police say Kanae and the two other men fled the area.
McCandless was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital where he died.
Police tracked Kanae to a home in Wahiawa and arrested him.
His bail is set at $1 million.
