An online poll to name a new state-of-the-art, $300-million research ship is over, and that ship has a name.
Sadly, it wasn’t what the Internet wanted.
The National Environment Research Council (NERC) chose the name David Attenborough, after British broadcaster and scientist Sir David Frederick Attenborough.
“It is a fitting tribute to a man who has done so much to explain the wonders of the natural world to all of us,” NERC said on its website.
The submission received 11,023 votes, though it was nowhere near the top contender: Boaty McBoatface, which received 124,109 votes.
NERC says the name Boaty McBoatface will still be used, not for an actual boat, but a high-tech, remotely operated undersea vehicle.
