Signs taken down as bacteria levels return to normal off Waikiki beach

The Department of Health is taking down signs after recent tests no longer showed high levels of bacteria in waters off Waikiki.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, officials reported an increase in enterococci that exceeded water quality standards off Royal Moana Beach.

That stretch of beach is right in front of the Moana Surfrider in the center of Waikiki.

Officials say contact with water that contains higher levels of enterococci can make you sick.

On Thursday, Feb. 16, test results reported much lower levels of the bacteria.

The influx was likely tied to the recent storm.

A brown water advisory was also issued for the entire island of Oahu following Saturday’s deluge of heavy rain and wind. As of Thursday, it was no longer in effect.

Rain can cause runoff containing bacteria, debris, and more to reach the ocean.
