The Sierra Club of Hawaii announced Sunday their endorsement of Governor David Ige for a second term.
“Powerful interests opposed David Ige in all of his efforts – interests that value short term profit over Hawai’i’s long term security. But Governor Ige never once backed down,” said Colin Yost.
“For his dedication to the public interest and for his determination to do what’s right for Hawai’i’s future, David Ige deserves our support and our votes,” said Yost, who is the elected chair of the Executive Committee for the Sierra Club of Hawaii.
Jonathan Scheuer, chair of the Sierra Club’s volunteer political committee, called Governor Ige the climate governor as he listed the Administration’s many accomplishments to combat climate change.
“Governor David Ige is the exactly the kind of leader Hawaii needs right now,” Scheuer added.
Governor Ige said, “It is truly an honor to receive an endorsement from the Sierra Club of Hawai’i. We should all aspire to their 20,000 members’ hard work statewide to take care of our earth. The Sierra Club of Hawai’i has been a leader for 50 years in caring for our ʻāina. From restoring our rainforests to enhancing our water to minimizing C02 emissions and preparing for climate change, I am committed to working with the Sierra Club to protect and preserve our environment for future generations.”
The campaign for Ige’s primary election opponent U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa released a statement.
It read in part, “The Sierra Club of Hawai’i’s announcement does not diminish Colleen Hanabusa’s support for the organization nor her commitment to protect our environment, particularly Hawai’i’s natural resources. Even while endorsing the incumbent, the Sierra Club today acknowledged Congresswoman Hanabusa’s excellent voting record in Congress and proven leadership demonstrated throughout her political career in support of environmental issues.”
The Hanabusa campaign also released the letter it received from the Sierra Club of Hawaii.
It read in part, “With respect we must share that while the Hawai`i Chapter and National Club has endorsed you in past elections for Congress, we have chosen to endorse the incumbent David Ige in this primary election. We deeply appreciate the commitment to public service you hold, and your excellent voting record in Congress.”
