Rolovich names Woolsey starting quarterback, releases depth chart

News

A nearly three-week quarterback battle in the University of Hawaii football team’s fall camp came to an end Thursday as head coach Nick Rolovich named Ikaika Woolsey the team’s starting quarterback against Cal.

“This was who gives us the best chance to win right now, and we felt like that was Ikaika,” Rolovich said.

Woolsey had taken the lion’s share of reps with the first team throughout camp, and is the only quarterback on the roster with Division 1 collegiate experience.

“I think his experience showed in the comfort level in a leadership role,” Rolovich said. “That’s where you might have seen the experience. It’s not the games played. It’s none of that. You see his place on this football team, there’s a comfort level that’s nice to have.”

The red-shirt senior started five games in 2015, completing 73 of 149 passes for 908 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions.

In his career, Woolsey has compiled 19 starts.

Woolsey beat out two other finalists in red-shirt freshman Aaron Zwahlen and junior college transfer Dru Brown.

“I think Ikaika has shown a lot of really good leadership ability as far as bringing this team,” Rolovich said. “He’s done a lot of the little things right. That’s not saying that the other two guys haven’t, because they really made it tough, and they’ve become better quarterbacks through the process and I think both of them have bright futures.”

Hawaii will face off with Cal Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. HST in Sydney, Australia. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Rolovich also released the teams two-deep depth chart Thursday, where reigning thousand-yard rusher Paul Harris is locked in a battle for the starting spot with junior Diocemy Saint Juste.
