Red-hot Rainbow Wahine leave for Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-The University of Hawai’i women’s basketball team (21-10, 12-4 BWC) heads to Los Angeles, Calif. this week to take on third-seeded and 10th-ranked UCLA (24-8) in the First Round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 19 at 3:30 pm (PT). The winner of the UH-UCLA match-up will face the winner of the South Florida (23-9) vs. Colorado State (31-1) game on Monday, March 21. Ticket information will be forthcoming.

The Rainbow Wahine captured the Big West’s automatic NCAA bid after winning the 2016 Big West Conference Tournament with a 78-59 victory over UC Davis this past Saturday in Anaheim, Calif. at the Honda Center. Hawai’i comes into the tourney as the 14th seed in the Bridgeport Region.

It is the Rainbow Wahine’s sixth NCAA tournament appearance and the first since 1998. It marks the second all-time Big West tournament title (1996).

Overall, Hawai’i has advanced to the post-season 14 times total with nine appearances in the WNIT-including the last three-straight seasons under fourth year head coach Laura Beeman.

Hawai’i finished the season strong, winning 11 of its last 12 games down the stretch. She joins Vince Goo as the only other Rainbow Wahine basketball coach to lead the Rainbow Wahine to the NCAA tourney.
