Recent Kauai storm likely shattered national rainfall record

The National Weather Service says rainfall totals from Kauai’s last flash-flooding event may have shattered the national rainfall record for a 24-hour period.

Initial data from a rain gage in Waipa, Kauai recorded 49.69 inches of rain from April 14 to 15.

The highest rainfall record in a 24-hour period currently belongs to Alvin, Texas, where 43 inches of rain was recorded on July 25 to 26, 1979.

The current record for the state of Hawaii is 38 inches of rain recorded at Kilauea, Kauai on January 24 to 25, 1956.

The data from the rain gage that reported 49.69 inches of rain in Waipa will be reviewed and potentially certified as a new national record.
