Punahou graduate Nomura, Arkansas advance into NCAA Super Regional Round

The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship regionals round continued Sunday with seven Hawai’i high school graduates playing among five different teams looking to advance in their respective regional brackets. When Sunday came to a close, only one team is headed to the Super Regional Round.

Rick Nomura (Arkansas):

Punahou grad Rick Nomura’s Arkansas Razorbacks grabbed a 4-3 victory over St. Johns to sweep the Stillwater Regional with a perfect 3-0 record. Nomura went 0-for-4 at the plate, but showed some stout defense as he contributed three putouts and four defensive assists. The Razorbacks advance to the Super Regionals and will play a best of three series against Missouri State.Tim Arakawa (Oklahoma State):

Also in the Stillwater Regional was Moanalua grad Tim Arakawa’s Oklahoma State Cowboys. Facing an elimination game in the losers bracket against St. Johns, the Cowboys fell short 2-1. Arakawa went 0-for-3 at the plate, but he did draw a walk and contributed three groundout assists. The loss ends Oklahoma State’s season.Mark Karaviotis (Oregon):

The Oregon Ducks’ Mark Karaviotis went 1-for-3 and scored the Ducks’ lone run in an 11-inning 2-1 loss against Iowa. The Maui High grad got it started in the bottom of the third inning with a one-out single to right field. He then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. A single later brought him home across the plate for the first score of the game. The loss eliminates Oregon from the Springfield Regional and ends their season.KJ Harrison & Christian Donahue (Oregon State):

Oregon State’s KJ Harrison and Christian Donahue took on Virginia Commonwealth University in the Dallas Regional. Harrison contributed the Beavers’ only run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning as Oregon State fell 5-1. Punahou grad Harrison finished 1-for-3 at the plate while Iolani grad Donahue finished 0-for-3.

The Beavers then took on Dallas Baptist in an elimination game and the result was much the same as it was against VCU. Harrison and Donahue went a combined 0-for-7 as Oregon State lost 7-1 and was eliminated from the Dallas Regional.Kolten Yamaguchi & Bo Coolen (Pepperdine):

Konawaena grad Kolten Yamaguchi contributed an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning for Pepperdine’s second run of the game. Yamaguchi finished 1-for-4 to help the Waves to a 7-4 win against Arizona State to avoid elimination in the Fullerton Regional.

Pepperdine advanced to take on Cal State Fullerton, where the Waves saw their season come to an end, 10-1. The Big West Conference Champion Titans now advance to the Super Regionals to play a best of three series against Louisville.
