Power restored to 1,700 in Hawaii Kai after early-morning crash

An early morning crash triggered a power outage in Hawaii Kai Thursday.

It happened at 3:40 a.m. on Lunalilo Home Road near Kaiser High School.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, a police-subsidized SUV veered off the road and onto the sidewalk, plowing into a Hawaiian Electric structure.

The crash cut power to approximately 1,700 homes and businesses in the area. Power was eventually restored to all customers at 4 p.m.

Police say the officer was off-duty at the time of the collision. He is assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division and has 20 years of service.

No serious injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

The department has opened criminal and administrative investigations into the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call police or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
