Police search for witnesses after man falls to his death

Honolulu police are investigating the death of a man who fell from a balcony in the McCully-Moiliili neighborhood.

It happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. at Kalakaua Homes on Kalakaua Avenue.

According to police, officers were called to the scene over “a heated argument on the upper floors” and discovered a man’s body lying in the grass at the base of the building.

EMS officials say the 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The homicide division is here because of that fact people, witnesses say they heard an argument prior to this,” said Lt. Phillip Lavarias, with the Honolulu Police Department’s homicide division. “Right now, we’re still investigating whether or not this individual fell jumped or was pushed from the balcony.”

Residents told KHON2 the building was on lockdown for a few hours. Officers canvassed each floor, searching for potential witnesses.

“We’re still talking to a lot of witnesses. We’re still very, very early in the investigation, and we’ll see what course that’ll take us,” Lavarias said.

Authorities have yet to identify the man, and determine whether he lives in the building.
