Kauai County Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. won’t be holding his title too much longer.
Carvalho’s term will end on Dec. 3, 2018, and a new mayor will step in.
On Election Day, Carvalho says he’s dealing with mixed emotions during this time of transition.
“I’ve had the privilege to serve Kauai and Niihau for the past 10 years, so that has a lot of emotions in there,” said Carvalho, “but at the same time, knowing it’s time for transition.”
A new Kauai mayor will be picked on election night, Derek Kawakami or Mel Rapozo.
Carvalho points out both ran fair campaigns.
As for what’s next for the mayor of the past decade? He says it’s all up in the air.
“I’ve been approached by private sector, government. I did run for another office, but that was successful for me as far as I’m concerned, because I got to meet a lot of different people throughout the state,” he said. “I want take that experience I’ve gotten and share that with others, with businesses, families, education, whatever it is, so I’m looking forward to more opportunities coming.”
