New ADU bill proposed because of increased sewer capacity from tunnel

There could be more incentive for homeowners who build an accessory dwelling unit.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell introduced a new bill, that would give homeowners a $60,000 exemption on the value of their property.

Homeowners could see a tax savings of $210 per year for five years.

“We want folks to know you don’t have a lot of time,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell.  “You gotta get going . You gotta build this. We have a crisis here. We want to see more units being built on properties on the island.”

If you live in Windward Oahu and were denied an ADU permit because of sewer capacity, the mayor is encouraging you to re-apply.

Since coming online in late May, the Kaneohe-Kailua Wastewater Conveyance and Treatment Facilities Project (KK Tunnel) is providing increased sewer capacity to Windward Oahu.
