Police have released new details in the death of a 14-year-old boy that occurred Friday in Puna.

At 8:09 a.m. Friday, March 25, police and Hawaii Fire Department medics responded to a report of a male juvenile who sustained an injury from a BB gun.

Upon their arrival at a residence off of Oshiro Road in Mountain View, medics learned that the victim sustained an actual gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.

On Saturday, March 26, the victim was pronounced dead after being removed from life support.

An autopsy determined that the injury was self-inflicted. Foul play was excluded in this incident, which is classified as a fatal home accident.

Detectives are conferring with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney on possible criminal charges stemming from the storage of the firearm.
