A man is dead after crashing his motorcycle on the H-1 Freeway near Kahala.

It happened at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday in the westbound lanes just past Ainakoa Avenue.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the man as Dale Kavulla, 31, of Kalihi.

Kavulla was traveling eastbound in the leftmost westbound lane when “he collided head-on with an SUV,” said Lt. Carlene Lau with the Honolulu Police Department. “He was ejected and thrown into the eastbound lanes of traffic of the H-1 Freeway near Kahala Mall.”

He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Upon landing in the eastbound lanes, police said another vehicle, driving at a slow rate of speed, then ran over his body.

Police said Kavulla was pronounced dead at the scene. The 53-year-old woman driving the SUV suffered minor injuries, according to Emergency Medical Services. The second driver was not injured.

“It does look like speed and alcohol are factors on his part,” Lau said. “We did get a call for a hazardous driver about five minutes prior to the collision.”

The freeway was shut down on both sides for several hours as authorities investigated and cleared the scene.
