Monk seal soaks up sun at Magic Island

Visitors to Magic Island encountered a surprise guest Thursday morning.

A Hawaiian monk seal hauled herself onto the sand by the lagoon to bask in the sun.

Lifeguards quickly roped off the area to give her space.

Ocean wildlife officials say she was there until about 12:20 p.m.

Jon Gelman with Hawaii Marine Animal Response identified the seal as Pohaku, a mature female that is typically seen at Ko Olina and Electric Beach in West Oahu.

She occasionally pops up in town along Ala Moana and Waikiki, and has given birth to pups in the past.

It’s illegal to harass a monk seal.

Officials recommend that people stay at least 50 yards away.
