Monk seal appears to free herself from fishing hook

News

A monk seal has apparently freed herself from a fishing hook.

Manuiwa was seen last Monday with a hook in her right cheek.

But when marine experts arrived at her location, just north of Kona International Airport, to bring her in, they found her without the hook and line.

Experts think that she may have been hooked with a barbless hook, which is why she was able to shake it off.

“We’re really happy any time people that are fishing if they are using barbless hooks and if they do, accidents happen, and if people do hook a monk seal, the best thing they can do is call then we can resolve the situation,” said Dr. Claire Simeone, Ke Kai Ola director.

Experts encourage the public to report monk seal sightings, especially if they appear to be injured or in danger.
