The mother of a boy, who went missing from school and was found hours later in Waikiki, is suing the Department of Education.
The incident took place two years ago.
According to the lawsuit filed Wednesday, the boy, who was five at the time, walked away from Kauluwela Elementary School in Liliha during recess.
The boy’s parents weren’t notified until they arrived at school to pick him up.
The lawsuit says a bus driver spotted the boy, who walked to Waikiki. Police were then notified and the boy was returned to his parent.
The mother, Gabrielle Valdes, is seeking damages for loss of income and emotional distress.
The DOE says the school held meetings to review its security procedures after the incident.
The teacher responsible for watching the boy resigned in 2015.
