The University of Hawai’i soccer team fell in Big West action to Long Beach State, 3-2, on Thursday night.
The Rainbow Wahine (6-5-1, 1-2 BWC) dropped their second conference contest in their first three tries. The Beach (6-4-2, 1-0-1 BWC), on the other hand, notched their first conference win of the season with a couple of second-half goals in a seven-minute span.
The Rainbow Wahine did counter with a feverish comeback attempt in the final 15 minutes, but could not produce the equalizer. Down 3-1 in the 88th minute, senior midfielder Sarah Lau drew a penalty inside the box. Sophomore midfielder Leialoha Medeiros scored on the ensuing penalty kick, but the team could not follow up another shot on goal before time expired. Medeiros’ goal was her 6th of the season and tied her with senior midfielder Raisa Strom-Okimoto for the team lead. It was also Medeiros’ second goal from a penalty kick this season.
UH struck first in the opening half after a throw-in from Medeiros. The Makawao, Maui native fired the ball like a rocket from the near sideline right into the box. The ball ricocheted off an LBSU defender, finding the net for an own goal in the 23rd minute.
The Beach answered a few minutes later in the 30th minute in a similar situation. Coming from the far sideline on a throw-in, Katie Pingel pulled in the pass from Elysia Laramine, sneaking the ball past redshirt junior goalkeeper Alexis Mata, tying the game up at 1-1.
LBSU narrowly outshot UH in the second half, 8-6. The Beach, however, were able to produce the deciding goals in the 70th and 77th minutes from Taylor Bistline and Sarah Maher.
UH will be back in action on Sunday when UC Davis visits Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m. HT.
