A woman was killed while sunbathing early Sunday evening at Hookipa Beach Park on Maui’s north shore.
She had been laying out on a grassy hillside, near the lower parking lot, when a truck ran over her.
The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Pascale Lelan.
The accident happened around 5 p.m.
Police say Lelan was near the top of the hill. One witness says she could have been sitting on a short lounge chair.
Witnesses also say the beach was packed yesterday and parking was hard to find. They say it’s normal for cars to park on the grassy area where Lelan was.
“It looked like a lounge kind-of short chair, and it was pressed up against the guardrail when I drove by,” said Kale Boverman, who was at Hookipa when the accident happened.
“There was like five or six cops there and there was a guy with a Toyota truck, that was definitely the kid, and he looked just shaken, you know? Pretty much in shock,” he said.
Police say Lelan was taken to Maui Memorial in critical condition where she later died.
The driver was a 20-year-old man from Haliimaile. He was not injured and has not been arrested.
The County says it is reviewing the incident with police and park officials.
There are no signs nearby that read no parking or sunbathing.
