A Haiku woman was killed in a two-car crash on Baldwin Avenue Tuesday evening.

Maui police identified her as Sydnee L. Apao, 20.

The crash occurred just before 5:30 p.m. west of Mahiko Street in Paia.

According to police, a blue 2011 Nissan Altima traveling eastbound crossed the center line at a bend in the road and collided with a white 2015 Tesla Model S traveling westbound.

Apao was pronounced dead at the scene. Her front-seat passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Paia, was hospitalized at Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the Tesla, a 65-year-old Makawao woman, was hospitalized in stable condition.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Apao and the Tesla driver were wearing their seat belts at the time, but the passenger of the Nissan Altima was not.

The involvement speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to four at this time last year.
