Man killed by city bus on H-1 identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has identified the man who was hit and killed by a city bus on the H-1 Freeway Wednesday.

He was Hawaii Island resident Brandon Pinpherk, 30, of Hawi. Pinpherk was pronounced dead at the scene, The medical examiner’s office said he received blunt force injuries to the head and torso.

The deadly accident happened at 2:52 p.m. Wednesday on the freeway going westbound, about a half-mile before the Waipahu off-ramp.

“I noticed there was a guy standing on the freeway on the construction area,” said witness Lyn Hall. “But to me, it was strange because he did not have any, you know, the safety shirt on? So I knew he was not part of the crew.

“As I passed him, I looked in my rear view mirror, and I seen TheBus. I seen him running towards and jumped over and he jumped in front of TheBus. And then TheBus hit him,” she said.

Due to the accident, traffic was backed up on both the Moanalua Freeway and the H-1 into town.
