Lottery opens for Hawaii Kai affordable rentals

If you’ve ever considered living in Hawaii Kai, a new development could be an affordable way to make that a reality.

Applications are now being accepted for 7000 Hawaii Kai Drive, an apartment complex that will feature hundreds of rental units and amenities including a pool, fitness center, movie room and dog grooming center.

Fifty-four of them will be offered at the following lower rates:

  • 2 Bed/2 Bath (26 units) – $1,495/month
  • 3 Bed/2 Bath (28 units) – $2,336/month

“Even if you wanted to rent a place here, you’d hardly find any vacancies, and in addition to that, there are no new projects in the area, so a lot of people who want to come live here, this is an opportunity for them,” said Theresia McMurdo, vice president of Avalon Development.

To get the lower rate, families must meet certain criteria. For example, a family of four cannot earn more than $76,000 a year.

Residents will be selected by lottery. “We saw how people had long lines and didn’t think it was necessary to put people through misery of long lines, especially since online, everybody has access to that,” McMurdo said.

Applications will be accepted through Aug. 31 and are available online. Click here for more information.

Construction has already begun and the development is slated to open in mid-2016.
