Suspect indicted after elderly woman beaten at downtown Honolulu bus stop

Local News

A 51-year-old man has been indicted on a first-degree assault charge in connection with an attack on an elderly woman in downtown Honolulu.

Police say it happened early Monday morning, April 17, at a bus stop on Alakea and Hotel streets.

Emergency officials say paramedics took an 80-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition with injuries to her face and head.

Steven Ho was arrested a short time later, and indicted on Thursday, April 20. His bail was initially set at $50,000, though the indictment requests that amount be increased to $150,000.

If convicted, prosecutors say they will push for double the usual sentence — from 10 to 20 years — because, they say, Ho is a persistent offender with a record, and the victim is elderly.

Ho is expected back at court next week for his arraignment and plea, at which time the judge can decide to confirm any increase in bail.
