Smoke detector saves Ewa Beach family

Local News

Honolulu firefighters were called to a structure fire in Ewa Beach early Saturday morning.

It happened at a townhouse unit on Kilaha Street at about 4:00 a.m.

First arriving companies found smoke and flames coming out of a unit inside the building. It was brought under control shortly before 4:30 a.m.

Kalani Balino was home at the time along with his brother and daughter.

He was able to get both out of the home, but his 62-year-old brother did suffer burns and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Balino credits their smoke detector for saving their lives.

Balino said, “Thank God for the smoke detector. Because I was sleeping and if it wasn’t for the smoke detector, I might not even be talking right now.”

His wife Tracie Balino said, “That’s the one thing we was blessed with, is that our family was okay. The fire department did a really good job. Our prayers are going out to our brother-in-law. But like Kalani said, don’t want to take life for granted. Make sure your folks fire detectors work in your home.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
