Hokulea is back on dry land after getting damaged.
The voyaging canoe ran aground as it made its way towards Kawaihae Harbor on the Big Island..
The canoe’s hull was damaged.
But Hokulea navigator Captain Bruce Blankenfeld said the damage was not major.
Hokulea is now at the Sand Island Marine Training Education Center on Oahu.
“She does need some love. The elements the sun and the rain everything a lot of the wood top side needs to be redone little bit, doctored up so it’s always a good opportunity for that,” Blankenfeld said.
He says weather permitting, they hope to have the Hokulea back in the water in about a week.
The next stop will be Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai.
Blankenfeld says the crew wants to return to the Big Island to continue the tour they were on before the cane was damaged.
