Queen Emma's birthday honored with special exhibition

In honor of Queen Emma's 181st birthday, visitors to Queen Emma Summer Palace in Nuuanu got a rare treat Friday.

For one day only, the Daughters of Hawaii, which owns and maintains the home, brought out Queen Emma's wedding dress, which she wore on June 19, 1856, when she wed King Kamehameha IV.

She was only 20 years old when she became queen.

"This dress is beautiful, to look at it and see just how tiny she was. She stood 5'1" and had a 19-inch waist. I look at this dress and I think to myself what a lovely bride she did make, very petite and very gracious," said Mahealani Bernal, Daughters of Hawaii.

Admission was free and the dress was on display from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Queen Emma's actual birthday was on Jan. 2, 1836.

Among the many accomplishments during her lifetime, Queen Emma founded what's now Queen's Medical Center and St. Andrew's Priory (now St. Andrew's Schools) in Honolulu.
