Operator of Maui hospitals asks for lawmakers’ help to alleviate debt

Local News

The operator of several Maui hospitals is reaching out to lawmakers for help.

The state-funded hospitals include Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital, and Lanai Community Hospital.

A proposal calls for a public-private partnership with Hawaii Pacific Health — which operates Straub Clinic & Hospital and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children — to help deal with some of the debt they’ve been facing.

“We are looking for a way to continue the growth, and provide health care services, for the county of Maui,” said Wesley Lo, Maui regional CEO for Hawaii Health Systems, “and hopefully do this while saving taxpayers money and providing competitive, fair-market value wages for our employees.”

The plan still needs approval by the State Legislature in order to go forward.
