Hawaii Island firefighters responded to a call early Saturday morning of a two-vehicle accident on Highway 19 south of Old Onomea Road in Pepeekeo that resulted in a fatality.
Police identified the deceased as Daven Dolan of Laupahoehoe.
Police believe that alcohol may be a contributing factor in this crash.
South Hilo officers determined that Dolan was operating a 2006 Lexus four-sedan that was traveling north, when he crossed the center-line and collided with a 2008 GMC Master delivery truck traveling south.
When firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:24 a.m., they found that a truck and a sedan had collided head on. Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles and they were removed using spreaders and cutters.
The driver of the truck, a 37-year-old man from Hilo, was transported to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Rescue personnel and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.
Firefighters determined that the sedan’s driver was already dead on arrival. The truck driver was treated on the scene by paramedics and transported to the Hilo Medical Center’s emergency room.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
