Ohana Hale Marketplace, which opened in October 2018, now occupies the former Sports Authority location in Kakaako.
Co-owner John Weaver calls it the first of its kind; an establishment that houses only local businesses.
There is a common misconception that the location is temporary, Weaver says, with many thinking the rail line will shutter its location in a few years.
But he says Ohana Hale has a 10 year lease.
“We aren’t going anywhere,” he said.
Weaver says there are plans to expand 7 more similar locations in the Kapolei area, as well as locations on Kauai, Maui, and two on the Big Island.
Ohana Hale Marketplace has one very special employee: Nico, a Shih-Tzu security K9.
“Nico has a 100 percent safety record. We have not had 1 item taken while he’s on duty. Not everybody is able to stay that,” said Weaver.
